Soundmurderer - Live DJ Set on The Breezeblock in 2004, featuring Earl 16 and Brother Culture

Soundmurderer (Todd Osborn) is a Detroit-based producer, who helped revive the 90’s London jungle scene in the early 00’s. Jungle (specifically its ragga derivative) is itself a combination of rave culture, breaks, and Jamaican-isms.

This is, without a doubt, one of my favourite ragga jungle mixes of all time. It’s such a great combination of tunes, mixing ability, MCing… I can always listen to it and hear something new. Generally speaking, drum and bass or jungle sets with MCs can be terrible - but these two know when to shut up and let the music play.

Granted! It’s definitely not for the faint of heart.

It’s a collage of sound and a jumble of references to sound clashes, movies, cultures, time periods…  quite post-modern if you’re willing to dig for the references. There are quotes from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dune! There are references to other jungle tunes outside of the mix! When Soundmurderer starts playing Wayne Marshal’s G Spot, Brother Culture starts saying “Papa Lover” (11:26) which is him quoting another song in the same vein, but one that isn’t played in the set. Nevermind the plethora of ragga samples and drum breaks, which are a whole other level of referential goodness.

On the other hand, this is a very noisy 36:52 that most people will instantly hate.
